Importance of Birth Control
Although frowned upon and prohibited in some religions and cultures, birth control is very important. - Sterilization – This is surgically done on a woman, man or both. For women tubal ligation is undertaken while for men it is vasectomy. The procedure is generally permanent, meaning that you will not be able to impregnate a woman (for a man) or obtain pregnancy.
- Natural birth control option – Those cultures and religions that oppose birth control methods instead advocate for couples to take natural birth control method. This involves a couple or an individual planning when to copulate (safe and unsafe fertile periods).
- Behavior – You can develop a sexual behavior that prohibits and regulates the introduction of semen into a woman’s reproductive tract. This is medically referred to as coitus interruptus.
- Breastfeeding – Some women extend their lactation period as a way of guarding against pregnancy. It has been scientifically proven that lactation minimizes pregnancy chances.
- Abstinence – Although mainly advocated for the youth as one way of avoiding early pregnancies and STD’s, you can use abstinence method effectively as a birth control method.
The effectiveness of some of the birth control options cannot be guaranteed. For this reason, your health care provider can advise that you to use more that one option to enhance your pregnancy protection. Various medical researchers are currently involved in studies to come up with birth control measures that can make it easy for both men and women to control birth effectively.
Because of the need to planned families, governments in different jurisdictions have developed education programs that include sex education. This is meant to ensure that teenagers grow with knowledge that they need to control birth when the time comes. Such education programs have however faced stiff opposition in some countries, leaving parents with the responsibility to educate their teenagers on matters sexuality. This has proved a challenge in cultures where discussing sexual matters with children is still considered a taboo.
