Condom is used as a contraceptive which acts as a barrier. It is meant for men as well for women. The condom for a male is like a thin sheath and most of the time it is made from latex and it is worn on the penis. The one meant to be used by women is made by using polyurethane sheath and it has flexible rings on both ends. However, the male condom is the one which is largely used
The male condom is normally used by a male when he gets an erection and it prevents the semen to enter into the vagina. When the man ejaculates, he will have to hold the condom on its base while pulling out the penis from the vagina. This prevents the condom to slip off and to enter into the vagina when the penis gets soft. The female condom is normally inserted into the vagina by using the close end. The other open end is left as an opening for the penis. The sheath will create a barrier between the cervix and the sperm. The condom can be inserted more than 8 hours before the actual intercourse; however it has to be removed as soon as possible after the sex.
It is not advisable to use the female and the male condom at the same time since they can stick together and they can slip during the intercourse rendering them ineffective. Normally when condom has been used, it should not be reused. You have to get a new condom every time you want to have sex. If you use condom to prevent sexually transmitted diseases or pregnancy, you have to use it throughout the intercourse. You should never use the lubricants that are oil based, like petroleum jelly, mineral oil or even baby oil. This is because they can easily break down the rubber. After using the condom, you have to throw it in the garbage and not in the toilet.
You should never use a condom that looks stiff, sticky or dry when you open it’s package. Make sure that you have checked the expiration date before you use it. In case it has any problem, you should throw it away and use a new one. You have to keep more than just one condom in hand and unused condoms have to be kept in a dry and cool place.
Most of the accidents of having an unwanted pregnancy even when the condom was used depend on how well he used it or on the condition of the condom. Condom can slip during the intercourse or it can be damaged by body piercing and fingernails. Besides of using the condom to prevent an unwanted pregnancy, it can also be used to prevent against STIs. Some condoms especially the ones made from the lambskin can fail to protect against some STI with HIV/ AIDS. When condom is properly used it can prevent STI but it will prove to be ineffective for the infections that can spread through contacts of sore skin or the base of the penis. It is always good to use condom against STI even if a woman is using another method for birth control.
Even if some people can use condoms without any problem, there are couples who can have allergy because of the latex condoms or who can get irritation because of the spermicides or lubricants that treat condoms.
